The Nudge | Summer Solstice

Jun 21, 2026

“Both the Winter and the Summer Solstices are expressions of love. They show us the opposition of light and dark, expansion and contraction, that characterize our experiences in the Earth school so that we can recognize our options as we move through our lives.”

Gary Zukav

This seasonal care package has been prepared by Kathy and the team at The Trailblazery.

Share the Nudge with a friend

Dear Friends, Kindred Spirits and Anam Chairde,

Táimid ar bís. We are delighted to share this seasonal edition of The Nudge with you as the Summer Solstice approaches here in the Northern Hemisphere.

This ancient solar festival marks the Zenith, the longest day of the year, when daylight stretches to its fullest expression and the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. For millennia, people gathered at this threshold to honour the life-giving power of light, growth and abundance. And yet, as the sun reaches its peak, it also begins its descent.

And there is great wisdom in this paradox.

At a time when the natural world appears to be flourishing with life, many of us find ourselves witnessing some of humanity's darkest hours. Across the world, old certainties are dissolving. Systems and structures that once seemed immovable are revealing their fragility. We are living through a threshold time, am tairsí where one way of being is dissolving as another emerges.

And still, I believe we are made for these times.

Deep down, we know how to navigate this collective rite of passage.

Our ancestors looked to the movements of the sun and moon, the turning of the seasons and the rhythms of the Earth to orient themselves within the great cycles of life. They understood that life unfolds in seasons. They honoured the eternal dance of Life, Death and Rebirth.

That wisdom has not disappeared.

It lives within us.

We carry an intelligence older than any technology, an embodied wisdom shaped by generations who learned how to endure upheaval, adapt to change and begin again. Long before artificial intelligence, there was the intelligence of the body, the seasons, the land and the soul. We carry the memory of transformation encoded in our bones.

The ancients understood the Solstices as sacred mirrors. As we approach the Zenith, we are invited to remember the Nadir. Every summit contains the seed of descent, and every descent carries the promise of a new rising.

If you would like to explore this dance of opposites more deeply, I would love you to join me for my free Summer Solstice matrimind on 22 June.

Together we will journey into the wisdom of Zenith and Nadir, exploring how these archetypal forces shape our lives, relationships, creativity and the path of our dán or destiny.

In a world that often asks us to choose one side or the other, we will explore what becomes possible when we learn to meet the tension between them and open to new possibilities.

Every day I see evidence that a remembering is underway. I see it in communities gathering, in people returning to the land, in the hunger for meaning, belonging and connection. I see it in moments of collective effervescence and the shared joy that ripples through a crowd after a brilliant victory, the spontaneous joy and celebration that reminds us we are part of something bigger.

I am witnessing a return to right-relationship with what has been severed. A re-entry into the living body of the Earth. A reweaving of belonging where it has been ruptured. A re-souling of what has been forgotten.

We hope this care package offers nourishment and companionship for the journey ahead.

May we harness the energies of this season and dream our shared future with courage, compassion and wild imagination.

May all beings know peace.

Beir bua,

Kathy

Summer Solstice: A Potent Portal of Transformation

The Summer Solstice is one of the power gates of the Wheel of the Year. Indigenous cultures understand the Solstices as turning points that offer the possibility for great change and transformation.

In Ireland, the Summer Solstice, Grianstad an tSamhraidh as Gaeilge, translates as “sunstop of Summer”. This time is celebrated with festivals, great jubilation and deep connection to nature’s rhythms. With only about four hours of darkness, the land and its creatures respond to the growing light and warmth. Before long, the birds begin to sing another day into being. As part of the natural world, we too respond profoundly to growing quantities of light and heat. Like the plants flourishing all around us, we’re invited to honour abundant growth and the blossoming of seeds sown within and without.

While growth continues until Lughnasa, the Summer Solstice represents the apex of the seasonal cycle, a turning point where light begins to gently wane. There is a natural polarity embedded within the solstice points which harnesses a shift in energies. This is felt across hemispheres as the northern hemisphere begins its subtle turn toward Autumn while the southern hemisphere welcomes Winter. From this point onward, the days gradually shorten and subtle signs of the approaching darkness begin to emerge. The solstice reminds us of the balance between expansion and contraction, light and dark.

At this solar peak, the Summer Solstice calls us to embrace vitality, fire and radiant energy. It is a time to shine brightly, prioritising joy, play, exploration and adventure. We reap the rewards of the previous season and honour the abundance that has emerged from seeds sown in the depths of winter. It is also a time to remember the darkness from which we come. We are invited to align with the solar power and the allyship of Áine and Lugh so we can harness the sun as a force of nature to illuminate and transform our lives.

Homecoming

A Samhain Retreat on the Beara Peninsula

We are delighted to announce that Homecoming, our seasonal rewilding retreat, will be returning this autumn at the threshold of Samhain, from October 27 to November 1, 2026.

We will gather in a very special part of the country on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork, one of the most mystical places in Ireland. Surrounded by temperate ancient Irish Oakwood Rainforest, rivers, waterfalls, powerful stone circles and sacred sites, we will come together in deep relationship with the land and one another.

This is a rare and powerful opportunity to gather in person, to connect with the land, share in ritual and practice in community. If you are feeling the call to reclaim your dúchas, deepen your belonging and find kinship, perhaps this is the invitation for you.

Save the date and join our waitlist to hear when bookings open and to receive all retreat updates and details. We cannot wait to welcome you home.

3 curated resources to mind your life and nourish your senses in the days ahead:

♥ Read: For your heart

Maggie O’Farrell – Land turns toward Ireland’s fractured histories through the lens of place, mapping and memory. Set in the long shadow of the Famine, Land follows a young Irish man and his father as they chart landscapes shaped by loss and survival. It is a meditation on what can be recorded, what is erased and how land itself holds the imprint of human history.

Doireann Ní Ghríofa – Said the Dead moves through a former Victorian mental hospital in Cork, where past and present begin to blur. Ní Ghríofa listens to the echoes of women who were confined there, weaving fragments of archive, architecture and imagination into a field of remembrance. It is a beautiful study in attention, listening and the lives that refuse to disappear.

✯ Taste: For your health

At this time of year, the land is alive with the purple blooms of fraoch (heather), including both fraoch cloigíneach (bell heather) and fraoch mór (ling heather). For generations, heather has held a place in Irish folk tradition and healing. The Summer Solstice Grianstad an tSamhraidh, literally "the sun standing still" was often regarded as a potent time for gathering plants, when the life force of the growing season was thought to be at its height.

Heather tea has long been used as a traditional remedy for coughs and respiratory ailments. Rich in antioxidants and containing anti-inflammatory compounds, it was often prepared by gently infusing the flowering tops. In some places, heather was also associated with protection, luck and blessing, its purple flowers colouring the hills at the height of summer.

If gathering, take only what you need and leave plenty for the bees and other pollinators who depend upon its nectar.
